Sequim police chief promotes two to sergeant, welcomes new officer

SEQUIM –– Detective Darrell Nelson and Officer Mike Hill were promoted to the rank of sergeant by Chief Bill Dickinson in a ceremony at the Sequim Transit Center last week.

Nelson and Hill fill the ranks made vacant by the recent retirements of Sgts. Don Reidel and Ken Almberg.

Hill will start work in his new position today, while Nelson’s new job begins Tuesday.

“This is an exciting time in the 100-year history of the Sequim Police Department as we promote two of Sequim’s finest to new levels of responsibility,” said Dickinson in a statement Friday.

“I am confident these two new supervisors will be instrumental in continuing to move our department effectively into the future without losing the high level of personal service you can only find in cities like Sequim.”

Also sworn in was new Officer Kindryn Domning.

Domning was a reserve officer the past two years. She will begin four months of academy training, followed by up to three months of local field training.

The city said Domning is expected to begin full-time police service this spring.

Hill began working with the Police Department as a reserve officer in 1998 and was hired as a police officer in 2001.

He has served as the K-9 officer since 2005 and received certified master handler status in 2009 and 2011 from the Washington State Police Canine Association.

Hill was certified as a master patrol officer in 2010 and is the only city police officer to have that certification.

Since 2005, Nelson has been with the Police Department, where he has represented the city on the Regional Drug Task Force and served as a field training officer, school resource officer and firearms tactics training officer.

He was promoted to detective in 2010.
