PORT ANGELES — A pedestrian is in critical condition at a Seattle hospital after he was hit by a flatbed truck on Front Street near Albert Street on Thursday night, Port Angeles Deputy Chief Brian Smith said today (July 19).
John P. Owens, 48, was taken to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles before he was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Smith said, adding that he did not know Owens’ hometown.
A Harborview spokesperson said this morning that Owens is in intensive care.
Police were called to the wreck on mid-block collision on East Front Street near North Albert Street at 9:17 p.m. Thursday, Smith said.
“Based on what we know right now,” from witness reports, “it looks like a pedestrian ran out into traffic, crossed the first lane and was hit by a vehicle that was trying to avoid him” in the second lane, Smith said this morning.
Police think Owens was hit by a mirror on the truck, Smith added.
Traffic was reported traveling less than 35 mph down Front Street, Smith said.
No arrests were made.
Traffic was disrupted, and the road intermittently closed, past midnight, Smith said. No traffic was being allowed on Front past Race Street at 11 p.m.
The driver’s name was not released because the investigation is continuing, Smith said.
Investigation is expected to be finished next week.
The State Patrol assisted the city police.
