PORT TOWNSEND — Reservations are being accepted now for a knot-tying demonstration on Wednesday, April 24.

Bill Dengler, a Port Townsend resident and member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, will present standard and alternative knots for use both on and off a boat from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St., Port Townsend.

The Wooden Boat Wednesday educational seminar is free, but reservations are required.

The hands-on session will be limited to 25 students.

He will demonstrate a knot for bundling pesky loose items, such as sticks from the garden, for easy carry and transport as well as one that serves as jug sling for carrying a water bottle on a belt or securing it to a cleat or eye on a boat.

Dengler will provide rope so students can practice the various knots as they are taught.

After tying practical knots, Dengler will show some of the ornamental coverings, such as French spiral hitching and St. Mary’s hitching, that adorn the rails of boats and provide more substantial surfaces for people to grasp.

In conclusion, he will show students how to start and tie a simple Turks Head that is used to cover ends and joins in ornamental coverings.
