PORT ANGELES — Forty Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps cadets from Port Angeles High School recently attended two days of Coast Guard training aboard the cutter Adelie.

Senior Chief Mike Jennings, commanding officer of the Adelie, invited the local JROTC unit to participate in numerous shipboard activities and training exercises.

The cadets were required to participate in every operation as the ship got underway, and conducted at-sea exercises before returned to port.

These included line handling duties, driving and steering the ship, piping orders over the communication system, and assisting with the launch and recovery of the small rescue boat.

Cadets also were afforded hands-on training with firefighting equipment, engine room operations, damage control, onboard weapons, man overboard operations, pyrotechnics, and chart plotting and navigation.

“Cadets came away each day overwhelmed with vast amounts of new hands-on knowledge and experience that will forever change their future,” Master Chief Jeff Perry said.
