PORT ANGELES — Volunteers will continue work preparing the Port Angeles Off-Leash Dog Park this weekend.

The dog park is expected to be opened either later this month or in July, Richard Bonine, recreation services manager, has said.

The work parties will begin at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday at Lincoln Park, which is on Lauridsen Boulevard east of the William R. Fairchild International Airport.

Volunteers will help clear the dog park site, install additional posts for the fence and begin hanging fencing material and hardware.

During the first work party at the end of May, about one-third of the fence posts were set, and a great deal of scotch broom was removed.

During the upcoming two-day work party, the remaining fence posts will be set, and work will begin on hanging the chain-link fencing.

Volunteers, which include members of the Port Angeles and Nor’wester Rotary clubs, are building the park.

It will be overseen by the city of Port Angeles, which contributed $10,000 toward the effort.

Donations account for about $8,000.

The dog park, located in the site of the former campground, will have two areas, with about one-third set aside for smaller dogs and a larger area for bigger canines.

Volunteers are urged to bring work gloves, wheelbarrows, post hole diggers, garden hose, weed eaters, wire clippers and any other tools to help build fence and clear the grounds.
