STATEWIDE: R-71 slightly ahead, but Eyman’s I-1033 headed toward defeat

Referendum 71, affirming the state Legislature’s bill allowing gays and senior citizens domestic-partnership rights and responsibilities, was heading toward passage statewide in Tuesday night returns.

But tax guru Tim Eyman’s Initiative 1033 that would put a cap on state, county and city revenues appeared headed toward defeat.

State results about 9 p.m.:

R-71

Approve 466,392 51.82%

Reject 433,550 48.18%

I-1033

Yes, 382,870 43.94%

No, 488,383 56.06%

Clallam County voters followed state trends and were also approving R-71 (53%-47%) while defeating I-1033 (51%-49%)

The margins were much greater in Jefferson County: R-71 approved by a 65%-35% margin, and I-1033 rejected by a 61%-39% vote.
