SHELTON — A Sequim woman and her passenger were injured after the car they were riding in crashed into a tree on Sunday afternoon.

Kathryn A. Gates, 61, of Sequim was driving east on state Highway 108 and was about 8 miles southwest of Shelton when she veered to the right, the state patrol said.

She was taken to Mason General Hospital with a fractured rib, right knee and ankle injuries and a chest injury, the State Patrol said.

Her passenger, Michael Gates, 49, of Waldport, Ore., was also taken to Mason General Hospital with air-bag burns and cuts, troopers said.

Both were listed in stable condition on Monday.

The relationship between the two was not available on Monday.

Kathryn Gates was driving a 2006 Honda Civic east on Highway 108 when the road curved to the left.

The car went off the road to the right and crashed into a culvert and then into a tree.

Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the wreck.

The State Patrol listed speeding as a cause of the wreck.
