QUILCENE -— It all started at a Rotary auction.

What followed — the detour, the bicycle trip, the “a-ha” moment, the accident — changed the course of Scott and Becky Schaefer’s life.

Scott Schaefer of Sequim is the new designated minister of First Presbyterian in Quilcene, a half-time job he assumed on Jan. 1.

He’s also financial director of Serenity House in Port Angeles.

He found both jobs after his life took a different turn due to a series of fortunate — and unfortunate — incidents.

“It’s been an interesting journey,” he said.

Two years ago, he was vice-president of finance at the San Francisco Theological Seminary/San Anselmo.

An ordained minister, Scott had studied accounting in college, and previously worked for a labor union and for the national office of the Presbyterian Church in Louisville, Ky.
