Is Peninsula turning ‘green’ enough, yet?

It’s been six months since “Step-It-Up” rallies across the North Olympic Peninsula drew hundreds and raised public awareness about global warming.

Since those spring rallies, have Peninsula politicians stepped it up?

The issue – in particular a proposal for governments to reduce their own greenhouse emissions – was discussed by every city council on the Peninsula and by boards of commissioners in Clallam and Jefferson counties.

Here’s what they did – and didn’t do.

  • Commissioners in Clallam and Jefferson counties and the Port Townsend City Council passed resolutions pledging to cut greenhouse gases to 80 percent of 1990 levels by 2050.

  • The Sequim City Council formed a council-citizens committee to produce recommendations.

  • The Port Angeles and Forks city councils discussed making the greenhouse-gas-cut pledge and took no action on it.
