PORT ANGELES – The first meeting of a support group for people who are grieving lost pets will be on Monday.

The Clallam County Humane Society monthly support group is also for those who own aging family pets.

The support group will meet at 6:30 p.m. the first Monday of every month at the Port Angeles Library at 2210 S. Peabody St.

The grief felt from a family pet’s death can be just as powerful as the pain of losing a family member, and the stages of grief can be the same, according to the Humane Society of the United States, www.hsus.org/.

The humane society also recommends ways to help with the grieving process:

  • Say good-bye to the pet, even if it is already dead.

  • Have a funeral, memorial service or other ritual which you design and has meaning to you.

  • Share your feelings about what your pet meant to you.

  • Remember the good times you had and compassion you shared with your pet.

The support group is the most recent community outreach program by the Clallam County Humane Society.

The nonprofit group also visits area schools to give presentations about animal welfare.
