Port Townsend: Organizers seek more funding for July Fourth celebration

PORT TOWNSEND — With the anniversary of our nation’s independence approaching, and a spectacular fireworks display set for sundown on July Fourth off Fort Worden State Park, organizers of the event are biting their fingernails hoping last-minute donations will come through.
Although fireworks shows have taken place in Port Townsend in the past — since 2002, when personal fireworks of any kind were deemed illegal within city limits — this is the first year an entire day’s event will lead up to bursts of colored flames exploding in the July sky.
“We’re trying to create a little more fun,” said Kris Nelson, coordinator of the event.
Festivities begin at 1:30 p.m. with Centrum’s Festival of American Fiddle Tunes show at McCurdy Pavilion at Fort Worden.
A barbecue and games begins at 5 p.m. on the lawn outside Fort Worden Commons.
The games are free and include relays, three-legged race, sack race and water balloon toss.
More live music will take place at 8 p.m. with the Port Townsend Summer Band conducted by Karl Bach.
The event is sponsored by Sunrise Rotary, that is also selling collectible fireworks pins for $5.
About $15,000 has been raised of the $20,000 goal to fund the event known as Fourth at the Fort.
