Roosevelt Middle School gets first new building since 1978

PORT ANGELES — Roosevelt Middle School on Monday celebrated the opening of a 6,200-square-foot gymnasium that includes a built-in stage — the school’s first new structure since opening in 1978.

Principal Brad Boudreau was joined by Port Angeles School District Superintendent Gary Cohn and several members of the School Board in a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Boudreau said the gym was a special addition for the middle school, which until now lacked a space for students to present live performances.

“This space was very much needed,” Boudreau said.

“The architect has done a great job making very creative use of space so that we not only have an excellent athletic area, but also potentially a good performance area.”

Bond issue

The gym cost $700,000 and was paid for by a capital projects bond passed by voters in 2000, said Roger Easling, construction manager for all major district bond projects.
