Shine: Hood Canal Bridge stuck open again; lane closed today

The aging Hood Canal Bridge drawspan stuck open for nearly an hour early Monday, blocking traffic in both directions until crews could get the floating bridge back together.

A mechanical malfunction was blamed for the inability to close the span after it was opened to allow marine traffic to pass around 5 a.m. The state Department of Transportation announced that the bridge was back to normal at 6:22 a.m.

The retracting span separating the bridge halves occasionally gets stuck in the open position. A 2007 east-half replacement project includes a new drawspan as well as straightening the road “bulge.”‘

Meanwhile, single-lane alternating traffic is scheduled to be conducted by flaggers today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. so that maintenance crews can repair streetlights and weather gauges on the east half.
