Port Angeles: Our waterfront columnist takes a smooth, quiet ride on the ‘new’ MV Coho

One word describes the ride aboard the Port Angeles-Victoria ferry, MV Coho, with her new engines:

Excellent.

I took the 44-year-old ferry’s maiden voyage with the new 12-cylinder General Motors Electro-Motive engines on Friday morning.

It’s astounding how much the noise and vibration has been reduced.

How quiet is it? My first mate, Barbara, and others around me weren’t immediately aware that we were under way from the Black Ball Transport Inc. landing Friday morning.

I enjoyed joining the passengers on that first voyage, especially the families which climbed aboard with a sense of history in the making.
