Taking a transit bus — all the way to Oregon

If you know how to use public transportation, that and less than $10 can get you to the Oregon coast from anywhere on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Just ask Jane Childers of Joyce, who has attempted a trip to Tijuana, Mexico, on public buses and today will depart from Port Angeles for a $5.85 trip to Seaside, Ore.

Childers is leading a troop of Girl Scouts down U.S. Highway 101 and across the Columbia River on rapid transit to prove that it can be done.

“I’m a real advocate for public transportation,” said Childers, who chairs Clallam Transit’s Citizens Advisory Committee.

The group of three women and seven girls in second through fifth grades depart at 5:20 a.m. on Clallam Transit Route 14 from Oak Street in Port Angeles, heading west on Highway 101.

Seven buses and 13 hours later — including a two-hour stopover for lunch in Aberdeen — the group will arrive in Seaside for a beach vacation.
