SEQUIM — Joe Tomita of Port Angeles is reluctant to talk about his role in pulling a Sequim man from a burning vehicle Tuesday afternoon near Gardiner.

The actions of Tomita, his wife Peggy, and several other people are being heralded as those that saved the life of 66-year-old Peter A. Chadwick.

Chadwick suffered burns as well as facial, abdominal and leg injuries in a fiery head-on crash along U.S. Highway 101.

Chadwick was in critical condition Thursday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, a nursing supervisor reported.

According to a Washington State Patrol report, 67-year-old Patricia Britz of Vashon Island was killed when her car veered across the centerline and struck Chadwick’s pickup truck head-on.

Tomita said Thursday it’s not fair to single him out as a hero because many people came to Chadwick’s aid at the crash scene.
