Port Angeles: Task force plans steps to stem bias

PORT ANGELES — The newly formed Community Multicultural Task Force discussed a number of suggestions Wednesday to combat racial discrimination.
They include placing “PORT ANGELES WELCOMES EVERYONE” signs in merchants’ windows, establishing a telephone hotline to report complaints and holding training courses for the staffs of local restaurants and other businesses.
The group is also expanding.
To get a broader cross-section of the community, the task force plans to add representatives from the high school, Peninsula College and a veterans’ group.
This was the second meeting of the 16-member task force, headed by Mayor Glenn Wiggins, formed after complaints by Coast Guard personnel that some local residents and businesses had treated them in a racist manner.
