The company developing a device to generate electricity from Pacific Ocean wave action near Cape Flattery could deploy its first buoy by September.

Mercer Island-based AquaEnergyGroup, Ltd. President Alla Weinstein confirmed Thursday that the company is pursuing permits for its $2 million pilot project.

Depending on funding and the permitting process, Weinstein said the company expects to deploy a buoy to monitor ocean conditions at Waatch Point, just south of Cape Flattery, by fall.

The pilot project to generate electricity would follow.

“We have a simple mission, to provide competitive, renewable energy from the ocean,” Weinstein said Thursday during a meeting of the Clallam County Economic Development Council in Port Angeles. “The ocean has plenty of energy.”
