Jefferson: PT backs YMCA project

PORT TOWNSEND — City Council voted Monday night to push ahead toward an agreement for recreation services from a new Jefferson County YMCA, but agreed that many questions remain unanswered concerning the proposal.

After voting unanimously to continue toward contracting with the new Y for recreation services, the council voted 4-1 to refer remaining issues to a community development committee that will explore questions raised from the public during a council meeting Monday.

Those questions include what performance standards the new organization would be held to, the county’s role in funding a YMCA that would serve both the city and the county, and the organizational structure of the new YMCA.

Under a current draft proposal, the city would sign a five-year contract that would pay the YMCA $90,000 a year to take over city recreation programs, City Manager David Timmons said.
