KINGSTON — The Sequim Wolves won a pair of drastically different Olympic League 2A Division baseball games this weekend, jumping right back into the postseason mix after a tough loss last week to rival Port Angeles.

In a wild game Thursday, Sequim induced a whopping 16 walks from beleaguered Olympic pitchers in a 15-13 win at home. The Wolves turned around and won with pitching Friday, beating Kingston 3-1 as Austin Hilliard went nearly the whole way, giving up just three hits.

With the two league wins, Sequim jumped from fifth to third in the Olympic League 2A Division at 6-4 (10-5 overall).

The Wolves only had eight hits but had over two dozen baserunners in Thursday’s win over Olympic. As usual, the Wolves were a terror on the basepaths with six stolen bases.

The Wolves got ahead 14-4 after three innings, then held on as the Trojans scored nine runs in the fifth and six innings to make it close.

Hilliard led the way, going 2-2 with a triple, two walks, two runs scored and four RBIs. Justin Porter went 3 for 4 with a triple, four runs scored, a walk, a stolen base and an RBI.

James Grubb went 2 for 4 with two runs, two RBIs, two steals and a walk. Johnnie Young didn’t have a hit, but walked four times, with two steals, two runs scored and an RBI.

Porter pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs for the win. Gavin Velarde pitched a hitless seventh inning, picking up a save in holding off the hard-charging Trojans.

In Friday’s game, Hilliard went 6 2/3 innings, striking our four and walking four, giving up just a single earned run. Hilliard also added a double and a walk at the plate.

Grubb went 1 for 2 with a walk, a run, an RBI and a stolen base. Ryan Clark had a hit and an RBI.

Sequim next plays at Bremerton at 4:15 p.m. Monday.

Port Angeles 6, North Mason 4

BELFAIR — Port Angeles fell behind to North Mason, but rallied with clutch runs in the fifth and seventh innings to pull out a 6-4 win and remain in second place in the Olympic League 2A Division.

Freshman Ethan Flodstrom was a hero again for the Roughriders, going 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs, and for the second straight game, driving what turned out to be the winning run with two outs in the fifth inning.

Tyrus Beckett and Bo Bradow each had two hits, with Bradow adding an RBI, while Carson Jackson went 1 for 2 with two stolen bases, two runs scored and a walk. Anthony Quinones had a double and an RBI.

Brady Shimko got the win in relief, going the final 3 2/3 innings and giving up just one hit with two strikeouts.

“I was really impressed with our approach at the plate today, so many hard hit balls in play only a few strikeouts on the night, it was good to see our guys barrel some balls up,” said coach Karl Myers.

“[I] can’t say enough about our bullpen tonight, Andrew [Pena] came in and did an amazing job throwing strikes and forcing North Mason to put the ball in play, and … Shimko came in with bases loaded one out and held them the rest of the game. Both guys pitched with a ton of confidence and gave us a chance to win combining for 6 innings of 1 run ball,” Myers said.

Myers said the defense also came up big to hold off the Bulldogs.

“Defensively a couple of phenomenal catches in the outfield by … Quinones in left and one difficult one in center for Carson on a top spin line drive. Gavin Guerrero had the play of the night though on a hard ground ball up the middle he gloved it, stepped on second and ripped a throw across for the 4-3 double play; a huge boost with 1st and 2nd, no out for North Mason,” he said.

Port Angeles (7-2, 9-5) played Saturday at home against Kingston, then will play at home at 3:45 p.m. Monday against North Kitsap at Volunteer Field.
