Clallam Marine Resources Committee offers paid internships; application deadline is Friday

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam Marine Resources Committee is offering four paid summer internships to qualified students.

The interns will work closely with committee members on projects intended to protect and restore marine resources.

The deadline to apply is Friday.

The 80-hour internships are to be completed between June 19 and Aug. 18. The pay is $15 per hour.

Here are the four internship projects:

• Kelp monitoring: Help organize and participate in kayak-based kelp surveys to be conducted at two to three locations along the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

• Reduce people and dog impacts on Elwha Beach: Conduct surveys of the use of the Elwha estuary area, remove marine debris after Fourth of July celebrations and perform educational outreach about the impacts of humans and free-running dogs.

• Crabber outreach: Help organize and participate in educational outreach events to recreational crabbers in Clallam County.

• Shellfish monitoring at Pillar Point: Participate in bimonthly shellfish sampling at Pillar Point for biotoxin analysis and monitor beach characteristics.

Interested candidates are encouraged to browse the website for more background and submit a letter of intent to Project Coordinator Helle Andersen at handersen@co.clallam.wa.us.

A list of questions to be answered in the letter of intent is available on the website.

Candidates must be at least 17 years old and show a high level of responsibility in their natural resources/environmental studies program work.
