PORT ANGELES — A new gallery owner and in-progress downtown mural will make debuts at this weekend’s art walk.
Heatherton Gallery will introduce its new proprietor at a retirement potluck party for its current owners, Sky Heatherton and Thomas East, at 5:30 p.m. today.
“I believe the person who will be working here will have the same heart as we have,” Heatherton said. “She will improve the gallery by tenfold.”
Before Heatherton and East pass off the keys, they’ll celebrate the past 3½ years at The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave., along the Port Angeles waterfront.
During the party, jazz group Blue Skyz will play with original members East and Dave Keyte.
One block from Heatherton Gallery, Bob Stokes and Jackson Smart will debut their progress on “The Pacific Fleet,” a 64-foot-by-10-foot mural project, at Studio Bob, 118½ E. Front St. upstairs.
The mural — a panorama of the harbor with ships of the Pacific Fleet — will be set high on the west side of the Station 51 Taphouse, 125 W. Front St., perhaps this fall.
Studio Bob also will feature “Smart from the Start,” 30 years of beautifying Port Angeles one sign at a time, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Smart created the iconic “Welcome to Port Angeles, where the mountains greet the sea” sign, the Elwha Klallam Heritage Center sign and the William R. Fairchild International Airport sign, among others.
Smart’s grasp of design, color and hand lettering lends itself to what he calls “SignArt.”
A no-host bar will serve drinks in The Loom next to the studio.
Other attractions at Second Weekend Art Walk will include:
• Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., will host high-octane rock band MCFD, 1960s to ’80s favorites variety band Dubble Standard and local artist Benji for the 2nd Friday Art Rock, or 2FAR, at 9 p.m. This event kicks off the art walk weekend.
A $3 cover charge helps support the musicians and artist.
MCFD stands for Myke Mydlyfe on vocals, Greg Crysys on guitar, Fluffy on bass and Sir Doink on drums. The band has been performing on the Peninsula for more than five years.
“MCFD has cunning, witty lyrics on topics ranging from politics to gout, a driving beat that falls somewhere between Black Sabbath and Black Flag, and [has] gone through more drummers than Spinal Tap,” Dan Lieberman, 2FAR’s publicist, said of the band.
Dubble Standard blends their originals with classic dance hall, lover’s rock, roots and dub music. The band includes Robert Lilly on drums and vocals, Craig Logue on bass, Kevin Briggs Jr. on guitar and Walter L. Smith on percussion.
Artist-in-residence Benji boasts a master’s degree in art and college teaching experience.
