The 13th Coast Guard District Command Center received an electronic position indicating radio beacon notification at 11:30 p.m. The beacon was registered to the 37-foot aluminum-hull fishing vessel Western Nomad that departed Friday morning but had not returned, the Coast Guard said today.
Coast Guard small boats from Neah Bay and Quillayute River stations and an Air Station Port Angeles MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew were launched to investigate the beacon notification.
The helicopter crew located the Western Nomad hard aground on rocks in the Pacific Ocean bay south of Cape Flattery with the two unidentified men stranded. Both were hoisted into the helicopter and transferred to Coast Guard Station Neah Bay. There were no reported injuries.
The Western Nomad poses no threat to navigation and was carrying approximately 200 gallons of fuel. Coast Guard marine investigators were scheduled to conduct an overflight today to assess any environmental issue, a Coast Guard spokesman said.
