WRESTLING: Forks grapplers second at Saldiver; PA sixth at Larry Brown Invite

GRANGER — The Forks boys wrestling team came in second out of 22 schools at the Tony Saldiver Invitational held in Granger this weekend.

The meet featured some of the tougher wrestling squads in the state. Forks finished with a solid 187.5 points. Granger took first with 251 points.

The Spartans’ Matthew Montes came in first at 106 points, going 6-1 at the meet. His teammate Jake Weakley at 160 pounds went a perfect 7-0 on the day and finished first in his weight division.

Conner Demorest went 6-1 and finished second at 120 pounds, while Dalton Kilmer went 7-1 at 132 pounds and also came in second. Sloan Tumaua went 3-1 at 220 pounds to take second in that division.

Hayden Queen went 8-1 and took third at 182 pounds.

Other Forks wrestlers at the meet include:

William Perez, 138 pounds, 6-3, fourth.

Walker Wheeler, 145 pounds, 7-2, fourth.

Jesus Garcia Dominguez, 120 pounds, 4-4, sixth.

Bryan Lucas, 126 pounds, 3-3.

Kaleb Blanton, 152 pounds, 3-4.

The Forks girls came in fourth as a team and got great performances from Peyton Johnson and James Demorest at the Tony Saldiver Girls Invitational.

The Spartans had 77 team points. Othello won with 315.5 points.

Demorest went 3-0 at 155 pounds to win her weight class. Johnson went 6-1 at 120 pounds to come in second place.

Morgan Rule went 3-1 at 170 pounds to finish third, while Natalie Horejsi went 2-4 at 125 pounds to come in fourth. Aspen Rondeau had a busy day, going 4-4 at 140 pounds to finish sixth.

PA, Sequim at Larry Brown Invite

FIFE — The Port Angeles boys wrestling team finished sixth and tops among 2A schools out of 18 teams at the Larry Brown Invitational on Saturday while Sequim came in 14th.

Port Angeles finished with 76 points and Sequim 32. Tahoma Blue won the meet with 259.5 points.

Jack Harrelson had the best showing for the Roughriders, going 3-1 on the day to finish second at 145 pounds.

Sequim’s Ari Skov had the Wolves’ best showing, going 4-2 to finish fifth at 170.

Other wrestlers who placed include:

Sean Lyman, PA, 126, 3-2, fifth place.

Cash Coleman, PA, 113, 3-3, sixth.

Phoenix Flores, PA, 132, 2-3, sixth.

Thomas Arand, PA, 182, 2-3, sixth.

Boys swimming Port Angeles 111, Bremerton 35

BREMERTON — The Port Angeles Roughriders boys swim team won its first meet of the year late last week, outpointing Bremerton 111-35 on the road.

The Riders swept all three relays and won seven individual events.

Grabbing top points for the Riders were senior Josh Gavin and junior Alex Che. Gavin captured first in both the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. Che picked up a pair of first-place finishes in the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Both swimmers also nabbed district qualifying times.

Among the highlights was sophomore Colby Ellefson, taking top honors in the 200 freestyle, achieving a district qualifying time in the process. Freshman Blake Nahory swam to victory in the 100 freestyle, while senior Adam Boyd topped the field in the 100 backstroke, earning another district qualifying time.

Picking up other victories for the Riders were the 200 medley relay team of Nahory, Che, Gavin and junior Landon Close, the 200 freestyle relay team of junior Max Baeder, Nahory, Close and Che, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Ellefson, Boyd, freshman Finn Thompson and Gavin.

Other individual district qualifying swims were achieved by Nahory in the 200 style, Close in the 50 freestyle and Ellefson in the 500 freestyle.

The Riders host Klahowya for their first home meet of the season at 3 p.m. Thursday at Shore Aquatic Center.
