TRACK AND FIELD: Pyeatt breaks own school record; No. 1 in state in 400

BREMERTON — East Jefferson, Sequim and Port Angeles athletes smashed personal records and earned Olympic League titles during the first day of the two-part Class 1A/2A/3A Olympic League Championships at Bremerton High School.

The Sequim girls had the best overall day and sat fourth out of the 11 participating teams with 51 points, thanks to league-title winning junior Riley Pyeatt and freshman Jolene Vaara. Central Kitsap led the meet with 66.25 points while East Jefferson was sixth with 27 points and Port Angeles eighth with 15 points.

Pyeatt set a school record in the 400-meter run in 57.35 seconds, more than a second faster than her previous school-record time of 58.41 set in 2019 and .36 of a second off the all-time Olympic League meet record, according to coach Brad Moore. It is also the fastest 2A girls 400 time posted in the state, according to Athletic.net.

Pyeatt also was second in the 100 with the second-fastest time in school history (12.70).

Vaara won the 100-meter hurdles title with a personal-record time of 16.76.

Moore said that Vaara’s 100 hurdles title was earned in just her third run in that race this season.

Junior triple jumper Lia Poore was East Jefferson’s highest-placing girls athlete, setting a personal best distance of 30 feet, 9 inches to take third. Teammate Aurin Asbell was fourth with a season’s best mark of 30-05.

Senior Gina Brown was fifth in the shot put (31-04), freshman Aliyah Yearian set a personal best time of 5:36.14 while finishing sixth in the 1,600 and sophomore Stephanie Sanchez was sixth in the 100 hurdles in 18.3.

Lauren Larson won the 1,600 in 5:09.22 to lift the Roughriders. Gracie Kennedy was fifth in the triple jump for Port Angeles, placing fifth with a new best distance of 29-10.25.

Logan Laxson led the Sequim boys (26 points) to sixth place after the first day, ahead of East Jefferson (25) and Port Angeles (11). Central Kitsap (63) led the meet.

“[He] won the league title in the long jump leaping 21 feet, a PR by a foot,” Moore said. “He also placed sixth in the 100-meter with a PR time of 12.50.”

Sequim’s 4×100 relay team of Theo McMurray, Adrian Brown, Henry Hughes and Laxson finished third in 45.71.

Adrian Brown turned in his season’s best mark in the 110 high hurdles in a time of 17.75, placing fourth, while his teammate Aiden Humphries also recorded a personal-record time of 19.35, placing 11th.

East Jefferson senior Bjorn Danaan-Devas set a new personal record with a league championship winning throw of 160-1 in the javelin. Teammate Tusker Behrenfeld was fourth with his own personal-best throw of 151-09 and Tanner Carstensen fifth for East Jefferson with a new best throw of 146-03.

East Jefferson junior Max Allworth-Miles also set a new best time of 4:40.94 in a fifth-place finish in the 1,600.

Port Angeles senior Caleb Flodstrom had the best finish for the Riders, placing second in the 110 hurdles in 17.08.

Jack Gladfelter was eighth in the 1,600 with a new top time of 4:44.34, while Naaman McGuffey was eighth in the high jump (5-02) and Reef Gelder was eighth in the long jump (18-02.75).

Forks third at league meet

RAYMOND — Skyler Steffen won three throwing events and the Spartans boys and girls teams each finished third at the Pacific League Championships at Raymond High School.

The Spartan boys posted 101 points, behind North Beach (109) and Ocosta (128).

Steffen, a senior, set personal records while claiming league titles in the shot put (43-8) and discus (144-6) and set a season-best mark of 140-8 in the javelin.

Junior Ashton Doyle finished first in the long jump (18-4) and was second in the 100 (11.67) and 200 (23.96).

Freshman Sloan Tumaua was second in the discus with a new best throw of 123-7.

The Spartans’ 4×100 relay team of Brandon Galeana, Ryan Anderson, Grady Earls and Doyle was second in 49.65.

The Forks girls totaled 106.5 points, while North Beach was second with 110 and Ilwaco won the meet with 135 points.

Senior Kesia Rowley had the best individual finish for the Spartans, coming in second in the 400 in 1:12.75 and edging out freshman LillyAnn Crowell who was third in 1:13.33.

Rowley also was third in the javelin (90-9), while Crowell placed third in the high jump (4-8).

Junior Candida-Rose Sandoval placed third in the 300 hurdles (1:00.98) ahead of fourth-place teammate Emery Damron (1:02.74).

Sandoval also teamed with Rowley, Leslie Hernandez Beltran and Myra Luong on a second-place run in the 4×200 relay (2:05.90).

Crowell, Rowley, Damron and Kendall Marshall also were second in the 4×400 relay with a time of 5:06.06.

Forks will compete at the season-ending Southwest District 4 Class 2B Championships at Rainier High School on Thursday.

Crescent track meet

JOYCE — Neah Bay’s Robert Richardson and Shilaily Woodruff each won three events as the Red Devils took first place in a Olympic Northwest B track and field meet at Crescent High School.

The Neah Bay boys finished with 57 team points, while Crescent had 38 and Clallam Bay 18 in Friday’s meet. The Neah Bay girls had 74 team points to Clallam Bay’s 35 and Crescent’s 32.

Richardson won all the sprints. He took first in the 100 meters with a time of 12.16 seconds, first in the 200 meters (25.10) and first in the 400 meters (56.66). Woodruff, meanwhile, took first in the 200 meters (31.94), first in the high jump (4 feet, 2 inches) and first in the triple jump (27-9).

Crescent’s JoCy Kazlauskas also won three events. She won the long jump (14-7 1/2), the 300-meter hurdles (59.73) and the 100 meters (14.55).

Kazlauskas also ran in the Crescent girls’ 4×100 team that took first. The team of Ciara Cargo, Kazlauskas, Katelyn Dunavant and Makiah Clark won with a time of 1:01.22.

Neah Bay’s Malcom Love took first in the shot put (32-9) and the javelin (103-11). Clallam Bay’s Mauricio Cruz-Lopez won two distance events, the 800 (2:34.67) and the 1,600 (5:46.37).
