PORT ANGELES — Port Scandalous Roller Derby already has big plans for 2013.
In just its third season, Port Scandalous has established itself as one of the top roller derby outfits in the Northwest.
The Port Angeles-based team has received apprenticeship status with the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, which is “like the NFL of roller derby,” according to team captain Molly Crabtree.
In March, Port Scandalous is scheduled to have a bout at Seattle’s KeyArena against Rat City’s Throttle Rockets on March 19.
Port Scandalous will kick off the year with a “boot camp” on Monday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Olympic Skating Center at 707 S. Chase St. in Port Angeles.
This camp is for aspiring roller derby girls 18 years and older and 12-17 years old.
Port Scandalous consists of three teams: the Brawl Stars (the A team), the Black Eyed B’s (the B team) and the Roller Punks for girls ages 11 to 17.
Attending boot camp is the first step to joining Port Scandalous. It costs $50 for 12 weeks.
Camp participants can bring their own gear (skates, helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, mouth guard) or borrow some from Port Scandalous.
Port Scandalous will open its season Saturday, Jan. 19, when the Brawl Stars host the Jet City Hula Honeys at Olympic Skating Center at 6:30 p.m.
As part of the apprenticeship with the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, Port Scandalous must fulfill a confidential list of requirements.
One that Port Scandalous has already met is to be a self-run organization.
Another change will be with Port Scandalous’s uniforms.
The team will all wear the same uniform rather than homemade outfits.
As Port Scandalous’ reputation grows, so does its needs.
It requires a larger site to host WFTDA-sanctioned bouts.
The team will also be competing in bouts throughout the West Coast and is seeking sponsors to help them meet travel costs.
