SPORTS: Port Angeles softball team bounces back by pounding North Kitsap; other prep reports

PORT ANGELES — So much for that sour taste of the Port Angeles softball team letting Sequim come back to score seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and taking an 8-7 loss Wednesday.

The Roughriders took out their frustration on North Kitsap, rolling out to a 12-2 Olympic League victory at Dry Creek Elementary School on Friday.

Port Angeles improved to 7-1 in league and overall while the Vikings fell to 1-4.

The Riders pounded out 13 hits.

Lauren Curtis (4-0) pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run while scattering nine hits, striking out four and walking just one.

Tori Holcomb and Maddy Hinrichs led the Riders on offense with both hitting 3 for 4 in the game, scoring once each.

Hinrichs knocked in three runs while Holcomb had two RBIs.

Hannah Wahto and Mariah Frazier each hit 2 for 4, scoring twice.

Port Townsend next hosts Port Townsend on Monday.

Boys Soccer

Port Angeles 0, North Mason 0

BELFAIR — The Roughriders and the Bulldogs each got their first league point of the season in a tight Olympic League match Thursday.

Port Angeles escaped the pressure put on by North Mason in the second half.

The Bulldogs hit the post on two different shots but were unable to score despite putting the Riders under a lot of pressure with long throws and corner kicks.

The game went to sudden death overtime for two five-minute periods and finished in a goal-less draw.

Port Angeles was able to hold the league’s leading scorer, Colin Ralston, scoreless throughout the match.

Coach Chris Saari named Kevan Keegan offensive player of the match, Jack Doryland and Max Bukovnik co-defensive players and Kyle Bingham transition player.

The Riders are now 4-3-4 on the year.

The Riders host Sequim on Tuesday in a league match at Civic Field.

Boys Golf

Port Angeles 439, Olympic 517

PORT ANGELES — Junior Joe Barnes, in only his fourth varsity match, earned medalist honors with a 2-over 74 for medalist honors in recent Olympic League action.

Barnes shot 36 on the front nine and 38 on the back nine, shooting two birdies and four pars.

“Joe was very steady and consistent all day,” Port Angeles coach Mark Mitrovich said.

The Riders improved to 4-0 in league competition and sit on top of the standings.

Garrett Payton of Port Angeles shot two birdies and eight pars for a 79 to tie for second with Trent Farris of Olympic.

Freshman Alex Atwell shot an 86 for the Riders while Tarren Grimsley shot 98 and Corey Roblan shot 102.

The Riders, with four of the top six golfers in league, now will host rival Sequim on Monday at Peninsula Golf Club in a makeup of a postponed league match.

Girls Tennis

Port Angeles 4, North Kitsap 3

POULSBO — The Roughriders rode their strength with a sweep in doubles to the Olympic League victory Friday.

Coach Brian Gundersen named Krissy Marvelle and Erin McKenna the players of the match.

“Krissy and Erin are relatively new to varsity tennis, and they won a critical match at the end for us,” Gundersen said.

Shayla Bohman and Danielle Rutherford of Port Angeles defeated Hannah Price and Tahia Frombach, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.

At No. 2, Chelsea Drake and Jordi Fickas defeated Danielle Haberly and Amanda Moreno 6-1, 6-3.

At No. 3, Kelsey Coffman and Bradi McFarlen defeated Amanda Turley and Amy Shafer 7-5, 6-2.

And at No. 4, Marvelle and McKenna defeated Emily Belton and AJ Hancock 6-2, 7-5.

The Riders, 5-0, host North Mason on Monday.

Lacrosse

PA drops 2 games in recent action

The Roughriders lost 17-2 to Gig Harbor and 14-7 to South Kitsap of Port Orchard in lacrosse action this past week.

Cody Olson netted six goals and four assists to lead Gig harbor to its fifth win of the season with the win over Port Angeles recently y at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor.

Desmond Ary also contributed scoring five goals and Ashton Sidebottom had six saves for Gig Harbor.

Port Angeles’ Eric Prosser had two goals and Keegan Gallagher and Ryan Root combined for 14 ground balls.

On Thursday, South Kitsap’s 14-7 win over the Mountaineers broke a four-game losing skid.

The Wolves got off to an early start, outscoring the Mountaineers 4-2 in the first quarter and adding on three more goals in the second to take a 7-3 lead into the intermission.

In the third, South Kitsap scored four and then traded three goals in the fourth to close out the scoring.

Austin Mitchell netted three goals and 11 ground balls in the win and Brandon Wasilchen had nine saves in goal for the Wolves.

Brendan Carpenter had two goals and six ground balls in the Mountaineers sixth loss of the season.

Ryan Root of Port Angeles recorded eight saves.
