SPORTS: Port Angeles blanks Port Townsend in girls soccer battle; other prep reports

PORT TOWNSEND — Kathryn Moseley scored a goal and had an assist while Paxton Rodocker was a “brick wall” in back as Port Angeles shut out Port Townsend in girls soccer Tuesday night.

The Roughriders beat the Redskins 3-0 in a battle of two of the better teams in the Olympic League last year.

This nonleague game was not as close as the score might indicate in the first contest of the year for both teams.

Port Angeles outshot Port Townsend 24-4 and the score could have been much worse expect for Redskin freshman goalkeeper Mia Henderson.

“She has incredible potential,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said about Henderson.

“She kept us from scoring on three or four potential goals.”

Port Townsend first-year coach Ryan Moss agrees about Henderson.

“Mia kept us in the game,” Moss said. “She is a very, very athletic goalie.”

Port Townsend, the lone Class 1A team in the 2A-3A Olympic League, graduated at least 12 seniors from last year’s powerful squad.

“We are a very young team with only four seniors,” Moss said.

The Riders came in planning on shutting out the Redskins, according to Scott Moseley.

“We really wanted to show good team defense and we did,” he said.

The Riders concentrated on Port Townsend junior Irina Lyons, the league co-MVP and All-Peninsula MVP last year with 17 goals.

“Their senior, Paxton Rodocker, shut down our two forwards very well,” Moss said. “She was a brick wall back there.

“She’s a very smart player. She shut Irina down very well.”

It was 1-0 at halftime as Kaitlin Boston scored in the 17th minute on an assist by Shayla Bohman.

Kathryn Moseley made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal at 53 minutes and Shayla Northern scored the final goal in the 62nd minute on a Moseley assist.

“This was a very nice win for us,” Scott Moseley said.

The Riders host Bremerton in a nonleague game Thursday night while the Redskins next play at archrival Chimacum on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a nonleague contest.

Crescent beats three teams in jamboree

JOYCE — Crescent, a perennial North Olympic League powerhouse, dominated the league jamboree Tuesday night at Crescent.

The Loggers beat the other three teams in two games each.

“The jamboree was good for us,” Crescent coach Alex Baker said.

“We had a good turnout with 13 kids and all 13 got to play.”

The Loggers defeated Port Angeles C 25-21, 25-16, Neah Bay 25-12, 25-20 and Clallam Bay 25-11, 25-14.

The Red Devils, who have won the NOL championship the last two years, were missing three or four starters for the jamboree, Baker said.

Neah Bay will be a strong team again, Baker said.

“Clallam Bay will be strong, too,” he said.

“They are a young team.”

Senior setter Rachel Bowen led the Loggers making 17 of 18 serves with two aces and 23 assists.

Freshman Shannon Williams had eight kills and two blocks from the middle hitter position, and she also was 14 of 15 in serves with two aces.

Williams, 5-foot-10, is from a long line of Williams sisters and half-sisters, including recent graduate Laura Williams.

Another freshman, Jade Blazek, was 14 of 16 in serves with six aces. She also did well setting.

“She did an outstanding job setting in her first-ever varsity match,” Baker said.

Junior Kathryn Youngman had five kills, a tip and made 13 of 14 serves while recording six aces in the jamboree.

The Loggers next will host Taholah in a nonleague match Thursday.

Chimacum 3, Auburn Adventist 0

AUBURN — The Cowboys opened the 2011 season on a high note, shutting out Auburn Adventist.

Chimacum won by the scores of 25-12, 25-13, 25-17.

Earning four kills each were Chimacum veterans Lauren Thacker and Krista Hathaway.

Perfect in serving at 100 percent were Megan Dukek and Kiersten Snyder while Olivia Baird put down four aces.

The Class 1A Cowboys next will host 2A Kingston on Thursday night.

SEQUIM — It was all Roughriders in the second half in the archrivals’ first game of the season Tuesday.
