SPORTS: Port Angeles 12U softball team starts World Series play

WILSON COUNTY, N. C. — Port Angeles opens play in the 2009 Babe Ruth League 12U softball World Series today.

Ten teams from around the country are vying for the World Series crown.

Pool play starts today with Port Angeles of the North Olympic League playing Dover, N.H., at 3 p.m. PDT.

Port Angeles will play four pool games.

The area team also plays Kinston/Lenoir, N.C. (the North Carolina state champion) at 2:30 p.m. on Friday; D.C. Everest, Wisc., at 5 p.m. Saturday; and Plaquemine, La., at 7 a.m. Sunday.

North Olympic competes in the National Division.

Teams in the American Division include Hamilton, N.J.; Washington, N.C.; SE Denver; Lodi, Calif.; and host Wilson County, N.C.

The top three teams from each division advance to the double elimination championship bracket.

Bracket play starts Tuesday, Aug. 11 and continues through Aug. 13.
