CHIMACUM — Chimacum shaded Forks 3-2 in a girls soccer nonleague game between two young and inexperienced teams Monday.
The Class 1A Cowboys of the Nisqually League scored three goals in the second half to beat the 1A Spartans of SWL-Evergreen Division.
This was only the second win of the year for the youthful Cowboys, who beat the same Spartans earlier in the season.
“It was great to come back for the win,” Chimacum coach Stan Berdinner said.
“It was a pretty even game, really. The kids played with a lot of heart.”
Forks coach Andrew Peterson likes the improvement of his team, which is winless on the season.
The Spartans scored both of their goals in the first half.
Senior Sierra Noles scored both of them unassisted for the 2-0 halftime lead.
“The kids are playing much better,” Peterson said.
“They are getting better and better with each game. Our young kids are learning as they go along.”
Emma King scored Chimacum’s first two goals to start the Cowboy rally in the second half.
“Emma’s first goal was the key,” Berdinner said. “That was a really good goal, and it got us going.”
Ashley Kelly scored the game-winner in the 70th minute.
Chimacum next plays Life Christian in Nisqually League action Thursday night at home while Forks next hosts Ocosta in a SWL-Evergreen Division game tonight.

Port Angeles 5, Kingston 2
KINGSTON — The Roughriders swept the singles matches and two of the doubles matches for the crucial Olympic League win Monday.
“Kingston has been playing pretty well lately, so this is a significant win for us on the road,” coach Brian Gundersen said.
Gundersen singled out Jordan Negus, the No. 2 singles player, as the player of the match.
Negus defeated Jordan Mick 6-0, 6-1.
“Jordan Negus had a game plan from the beginning of the match, and executed that plan really well,” Gundersen said.
At No. 1 singles, Hayden McCartney beat Aaron McCanna 6-0, 6-0.
Alex Brown won at No. 3 singles while doubles winners were Michael and Marcus Konopaski at No. 2, and Derek Schumacher-Kapono Rogers at No. 4.
The Riders next host Chimacum-Port Townsend on Wednesday.
Port Angeles 7, North Mason 0
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders lost only 12 total games on their way to the convincing Olympic League win Friday night.
Port Angeles lost just five games in singles as Sam Beasley beat Cody Champine 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 while Marcus Konopaski won at No. 2 and Michael Konopaski won at No. 3.
Marcus Konopaski did not drop a game.
Phil Scott and Daniel Manwell of No. 4 doubles, who won 6-1, 6-0, were named the players of the match.
“This was the first varsity match for Phil and Daniel, and once they settled down, they played very well together,” coach Brian Gundersen said.
Also winning in doubles were Hayden McCartney-Connor Reid at No. 1, Kevin Herzog-Alex Brown at No. 2 and Derek Schumacher-Kapono Rogers at No. 3.

at Sunfair invite
YAKIMA — The Roughriders fared well at the prestigious Sunfair Invitational on Saturday.
Three Port Angeles girls finished in the top 18 in their races.
“They placed quite well in their individual heats,” coach Pat Durr said.
Elizabeth Stevenson captured ninth place in her heat in Flight 3 (varsity No. 5 runners) in 20 minutes, 31 seconds while Hannah Wahto claimed 18th place in Flight 2 (No. 6 runners) in 21:34.
Freshman Annika Pederson took eighth place in the girls 2-mile frosh race in 14:04.
In addition, Michael Ahrens was 17th in the boys Flight 5 race (No. 3 runners) in 17:05.
His time was the sixth fastest time at Sunfair by any Port Angeles runner.
