CHIMACUM — Quinn Eldridge and the Chimacum baseball team remained perfect on the year after beating Sequim 9-4 in nonleague action Friday.
The Class 2A Wolves, currently tied for first in the Olympic League standings after beating North Mason 6-5 Thursday, at 7-2 and 8-5 overall, haven’t beaten the 1A state powerhouse Cowboys in several years.
Chimacum, in control of the Nisqually League at 5-0, improved to 8-0 on the season and is aiming for its second consecutive state title after winning the state championship twice in the last four years and finishing in the top two three years running.
The Wolves, meanwhile, have their eye on the Olympic League title, and host North Kitsap — tied for first at 7-2 after losing 3-2 to Port Angeles on Friday — Monday at 4 p.m.
This could be the biggest game of the year for both teams as they jockey for that league championship.
Eldridge, keeping pace with team ace Landon Cray, now is 4-0 on the year.
The duo easily is one of the top 1-2 pitching tandems in state.
Eldridge gave up just one run in five innings, scattering three hits while striking out seven and walking just one.
Austin McConnell threw the last two innings, giving up three runs — all in the seventh — and two hits.
It was an uncharacteristic sloppy game by both teams as they had five hits each but combined for 11 errors.
The Wolves had five mistakes in the game while the Cowboys had a whopping six, having more errors in one game than they had in the whole season until now.
Nick Johnston started on the mound for the Roughriders while Jake Hudson came in during the fourth inning.
The Cowboys erupted for six runs in the third inning to take control of the game.
Chimacum’s Lucas Dukek led all hitters with a double and two RBIs while teammate Victor Cienja went 1 for 2 and scored two runs.
Sequim next hosts fellow league-leading North Kitsap on Monday while the Cowboys travel to Charles Wright in Nisqually action Tuesday.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders just got back into the thick of things after scoring three runs in the sixth inning against the Olympic League-co-leading Vikings on Friday.
The Riders rebounded nicely after taking a 14-1 pasting at Sequim on Wednesday.
North Kitsap fell to 7-2 and is tied with the Wolves for first after Sequim beat North Mason 6-5 on Thursday.
Port Angeles, meanwhile, is in striking distance in league at 5-4, and is 6-5 overall.
Easton Napiontek carried the big bat Friday, hitting a two-out, bases-loaded double to score the three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Napiontek went 3 for 3 in the game with a double and a stolen base to go with his three RBIs.
Cole Uvila had another strong outing for the Riders, pitching the first five innings, giving up the two runs while scattering seven hits and fanning three.
Wesley Giddings (1-1) threw the last two innings, giving up no runs while picking up the victory.
The Riders next host Port Townsend on Monday.

KINGSTON — Friday the 13th was not kind to the Redskins, who had five hits to the Buccaneers’ two, but still lost the shutout.
Port Townsend had runners in scoring position in four innings but could not buy a timely hit or find a way to manufacture a run.
Cody Russell pitched the seven-inning two-hitter.
The only Kingston run came in the fourth inning when Russell gave up a walk and then the runner made it to third on two errant pick-offs, finally scoring on an RBI-ground ball.

FORKS — The Spartans dominated the second game in SWL-Evergreen Division action while they weren’t able to make a complete comeback in the first game.
Braden Decker and Brady Castellano combined on the mound to give up just one run.
Castellano came in early and picked up the win.
“We got off to a good start in the second game and didn’t let up,” Forks coach Jerry Deford said.
The Spartans scored four runs in the first inning to take control right away.
Michael Dean had three hits in the second game while Mitchell Leppell, Cameron Leons and Troy Johnson earned two hits each.
The bats also were alive in the first game as Reece Hagen rapped out two doubles while Nick Gilmore and Mark Jacobson had two hits each.
Dean and Javier Conteras had a double each in the first game.
Forks next hosts Montesano in a league doubleheader Monday.
