Sports: 24 turnovers doom Roughriders to 57-51 loss . . . plus other Saturday results

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles High School boys basketball team lost 57-51 to Bellarmine Prep in nonleague play Saturday.

“We had opportunities to tie up and the ball just wouldn”t’ go in or we’d throw it away,” Roughriders coach Lee Sinnes said after the game.

Andy Ochs and Scott Helpenstell each had 12 points for the Riders.

“It was turnovers that kind of did us in,” said Sinnes.

Port Angeles committed 24 turnovers in the game.

Darrington 57, Clallam Bay 56

DARRINGTON — The Bruins split a pair of games at the Darrington Tournament, held Friday and Saturday.

Clallam Bay beat LaConner 52-46 in overtime before taking second place after losing to the tournament host.

Darrington was last year’s Washington state B-level champion.

Danny Angulo led the Bruins with 18 points against Darrington on Saturday and Adam Lovik added 17.

Melchor Ramos had 10 points and six assists for the Bruins, who led 35-23 at the half.

In the LaConner game Friday, Ramos had 16 points and six assists.

Clallam Bay (1-1) led 38-28 after three quarters but only scored a single point in the fourth as LaConner was able to force the extra period.

Dylan Simmons had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Bruins and Angulo and Lovik each added 10.

Snohomish Christian 62, Crescent 61

MOUNT LAKE TERRACE — The Loggers lost a close game in the final seconds to Snohomish County Christian on Saturday.

Crescent (2-3) led most of the game and was up 49-41 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Phillip Mair scored 19 points for the Loggers and Isaiah Bower chipped in 16.

Seth Williams had 14 points for Crescent.

Girls Basketball Crescent 49, Snohomish Christian 34

MOUNT LAKE TERRACE — The Loggers got 17 rebounds from Ruth Wilhelm and improved to 2-1 with a nonleague win Saturday.

Wilhelm also scored 15 points.

Ashley Thompsen added 10 points and eight boards for Crescent. Emma Hefton and Tiffany Winters each chipped in eight points of their own.

Tara Holgate led Snohomish with 14 points.

Gymnastics Port Angeles second

OLYMPIA — The Roughriders finished second to Olympia in a three-way Narrows League meet Saturday.

Port Angeles scored 155.55 points, Olympia had 162.7 and Capital finished with 140.6.

Ariel Winger took third place for Port Angeles in the balance beam with a score of 9.0

In the all-around, Danielle Schemm captured sixth for the Riders with a score of 31.95.

Cailey Condon had a fifth-place finish in the uneven bars with a 7.8.
