PREP WRESTLING: Port Townsend ‘humble’ in dominant dual-meet wins

Forks wins league dual

PORT TOWNSEND — A wrestling dual chock full of Port Townsend pinfalls and some strong displays of sportsmanship ended with the Redhawks besting Bellevue Christian and shutting down Seattle Academy.

Wednesday’s dual at Bruce Blevins Gymnasium ended with Port Townsend winning 17 of 24 matches while taking down the Vikings 45-6 and the Cardinals 60-12.

“We wrestled amazing,” Redhawks coach Steve Grimm said.

“The kids were excited to put on a show for the home crowd with family, friends and fans and boy did they!”

Dylan Tracer, the top-ranked 182-pounder in Class 1A by Washington Wrestling Report, returned from an injury suffered in the Redhawks final football game and picked up a pin.

Grimm moved some wrestlers around with Tracer’s return — bumping up Wes Blue, No. 11 at 182 to the 195-pound class and moving Kyle Caldwell up to 220.

Port Townsend also had Logan Massie wrestling at 145, Ian Linn-Glasgow at 152, Odin Smith at 160 and Kyle Collier at 170 — making for what Grimm described as “a pretty stacked lineup from 145 to 220.”

Wrestling against a Bellevue Christian squad with just three wrestlers and an underclassmen-heavy Seattle Academy, Grimm said he enjoyed the sportsmanship displayed by his squad.

“I was most proud that we dominated but were also humble,” Grimm said. “Hearing from the other coaches how respectful our wrestlers were before and after match.”

Grimm said that some matches found experienced state competitors such as Tracer and Caldwell matched up against sophomores. But it wasn’t just handshake, pin, handshake out on the mat.

“In most cases we outmatched them big time,” Grimm said. “But our guys were telling their opponents words of encouragement after the match. Like certain moves [that worked] or to keep your head up, keep with it and improving.”

Grimm said it was a measure of the character of his team.

“Our kids have been there too and we do have some dominate wrestlers, but we all started somewhere. And we’ve been beaten too. It showed what type of program/ athletes we have.”

Ike Banks and Logan Massie had big nights, each wrestling three matches to ensure Seattle Academy’s wrestlers all got to compete.

Banks earned two pins and a 17-11 win by decision.

Massie, a sophomore, continued his climb up the ladder by beating Bellevue Christian’s 12th ranked 145-pounder in an 11-9 decision and

“Logan had a great match,” Grimm said. “He is a gifted sophomore that has a talent for scrambles. He has been quietly beating top wrestlers all year. I am surprised he is not ranked yet, but I like the idea of him being a unknown.”

Girls wrestle

Port Townsend’s two girls wrestlers each wrestled female counterparts from Seattle Academy.

Savannah Hoffman earned a first-round pin at 120.

“She hit a beautiful throw to get the pin,” Grimm said. “She’s still green, it being her first year [competing], but she’s got potential.”

And Chloe Lampert earned another first-round pin at 130 pounds.

“She wrestled in middle school and it shows,” Grimm said.

Other Port Townsend winners included Linn-Glasgow, Smith, Collier, Blue and Caldwell — all of whom earned first-round pins.

Devon Bennett-Anderson, Xael Hernandez-Duran and Lars Wakefield also earned wins by pin in exhibition matches.

The Redhawks will wrestle at Tenino’s Tough Beaver Bash on Saturday before hosting Nisqually League power Vashon at home on Wednesday and competing against Bremerton and Port Angeles at Port Angeles on Thursday.

TENINO — The Spartans returned home with a victory over the Grizzlies in a league dual at Tenino on Wednesday.

All four Evergreen League squads competed in the dual meet, with two of the teams wrestling two matches and two others competing in just one meet.

Forks went 5-2 in contested matches, winning all by pinfall.

Winners were Dalton Kilmer at 126 pounds, Jake Weakley (132), Luis Perez (145), Hayden Baker (170) and Hayden Queen at 182.

Spartans coach Bob Wheeler wanted to clear up some scheduling confusion regarding league meets.

Forks’ next Evergreen League dual will be held against Montesano and Elma on Thursday at Elma. The Spartans will be the home team for the Montesano match, but Wheeler wanted to make sure the public knows both duals will be held in Elma.

Forks will not host an Evergreen League regular season dual this season, but the Spartans will host the first stage of the postseason — the Evergreen League Championship on Feb. 8.

Forks will next compete at Saturday’s Island Invitational at Bainbridge.
