PREP SPORTS: Sequim soccer continues high-scoring ways

Wolves’ Little tops PA’s Gelder for league tennis crown

SEQUIM — Sequim stacked goal upon goal on the scoreboard, earning their fourth straight win by five or more goals with a 6-0 senior night win over North Mason on Wednesday.

“I think a lot of it is we are trying to play more to our strengths and our strength is in the attack,” Wolves coach Ken Garling said.

“As soon as we win the ball we want to get forward.”

Sequim did an excellent job of doing just that while rolling to a 4-0 lead at halftime.

Taryn Johnson netted a first-half hat trick, what Garling belived to be her fourth three-goal game of the season.

“She’s got to be pushing close to 20 goals,” Garling said. “She’s had four hat tricks and another four-goal game.”

“Taryn got us on the score sheet in the second minute on a breakaway goal. She took a feed from Hannah Wagner, beat the two center defenders with her pace and got in behind them.”

Wagner notched a goal in the 14th minute, picking up the ball near midfield and combining on the play with Jenny Gomez.

Johnson then ripped off a pair of goals in a matter of minutes, scoring in the 26th and 28th minutes.

“It’s pretty special to have a player like that who has a nose for scoring and the striker’s mentality,” Garling said. “When she scores she scores in bunches.”

Senior Zoe Moore scored in the second half for Sequim.

“Kaia Lestage played a good ball up, Taryn made a good through ball and Zoe the ball back in front of the keeper and essentially dribbled the ball into the back of the net. It was a really well-put together goal.”

Wagner added the final goal, scoring in a scrum off a Johnson corner kick.

Sequim (10-4-0) finished third among Class 2A Olympic League squads. Seeding for the 16-team West Central District Tournament that begins Tuesday will be based on WIAA RPI rankings, which currently finds the Wolves ranked 25th out of 61 2A teams.

That means a district playoff seed likely somewhere in the middle of the pack.

“We will most likely be on the road and it’s good to see the girls in good form going into the postseason and relatively injury free,” Garling said.

Tennis on to Bi-districts

POULSBO — Sequim’s Garrett Little edged Port Angeles’ Reef Gelder for the Olympic League Boys Tennis Tournament’s singles championship, rallying to win a thriller 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

“Reef played a great tournament,” Riders coach Brian Gundersen said. “He gave Garrett all he could handle and I’m feeling like his game is in great shape for districts.”

Both players will advance to today’s Class 2A Bi-District Tournament at the Kitsap Tennis and Athletic Center in Bremerton, along with some teammates.

Sequim’s Connor Bear gave Little all he could handle in a singles semifinal match, falling 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, before beating Port Angeles’ Eden Bailey 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the third/fourth-place match.

Bear ended up fourth after falling 6-2, 6-0 to North Kitsap’s Jason Hart.

Bailey will be the Bi-District alternate after falling in the fifth/sixth place match to the Vikings’ Andrew Meyers 4-6, 6-2, 7-6.

“Edun had a fantastic tournament. He played his best tennis of the year and came up just short in the last match,” Gundersen said.

The Riders top doubles team, Damon Gundersen and Michael Soule, defeated two different teams from North Kitsap to reach the third-place match which they lost in three sets to the No. 2 seeded team from Bremerton.

“Damon and Michael were playing in an absolutely loaded doubles bracket and the fact they are moving on with a fourth-place finish is indicative of how they are playing right now,” Gundersen said.
