PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles rallied back after allowing an early goal and triumphed 2-1 over Olympic on a two-goal night by senior forward Xander Maestas in an Olympic League boys soccer match at Wally Sigmar Field at Peninsula College.
“Some outstanding forward play and finishing from Xander Maestas made the difference in the game,” coach Chris Saari said.
The Trojans found the scoreboard in the fifth minute, scoring when the Riders couldn’t clear the ball after a flip throw into the penalty box.
Dayton Williams assisted on Maestas’ equalizer in the 20th minute.
“Dayton Williams got by the Trojan defense on the right side of the penalty box and chipped a ball into the near post,” Saari said. “Xander Maestas tracked the ball, elevated and headed home the equalizer to the near post from 6-yards out.”
Maestas put Port Angeles ahead in the 53rd minute.
“Maestas collected a Marcus Hogan punt/assist near midfield, beat four Olympic defenders and placed a low bouncing ball to the far post,” Saari said.
Saari said Hogan “had some big saves to keep PA in the game.” Hogan finished with six saves and was Saari’s defensive player of the game. Maestas and Williams were offensive and transition players of the game, respectively.
Port Angeles (2-3-0, 3-3-0) hopes to rest some injured players in preparation for a big week, including an away match against North Kitsap on Tuesday.
Sequim 4, N. Kitsap 2, PK shootout
SEQUIM — Goalkeeper Jack van de Wege stopped two penalty kicks as the Wolves earned a shootout win over the Vikings on Thursday.
“North Kitsap is a very good team so the kids were focused on putting our defensive mindset first and then focus on the attack and they did a really good job of that,” coach Ken Garling said.
“In the fifth minute Brandon Charters made a nice weighted pass in between two defenders and Kristian Mingoy had a breakaway but it was ruled offsides.
So we reset and it was a battle back and forth for both teams.
Garling said Sequim did well to hold on to the ball and play up on the Vikings side of the field all game long.
“We just couldn’t put any in the net,” Garling said.
Van de Wege made back-to-back saves after the Wolves went up 3-2 in the shootout.
“Two penalty-kick saves is pretty tremendous,” Garling said.
Sequim (4-0-0, 4-1-0) hosts unbeaten Bainbridge (4-0-0) on Tuesday.
