PREP ROUNDUP: Tait, other Riders shine at Arnie Young Invite; EJ soccer wins

RENTON — Faerin Tait, Brody Pierce and Hunter Flores all had solid showings and numerous athletes posted personal-best times and distances in the 28-team Arnie Young Track and Field Invitational held last weekend at Renton Memorial Stadium.

Tait placed in the top 10 in three events. She was fifth in the girls’ 100 hurdles with a personal-record time of 15.9 seconds, seventh in the 200-meter run with another personal-record time of 26.96 and eighth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:03.29.

Though it is still early in the track season, Tait’s time in the 100 hurdles was the fourth-best in the state among 2A girls.

For the boys, Pierce was fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 41 feet, 8 inches, a personal record and the sixth-best triple jump in the state among 2A boys. Flores was fifth in the javelin with a personal-record throw of 141-4.

Easton Dempsey had a good showing in the 800 meters, coming in sixth with a personal-record time of 2:02.92, while Keatyn Hoch was seventh in the long jump with a personal-record leap of 18-11. Hoch was also 10th in the triple jump at 40-0, also a personal record.

Another top-10 finish included an eighth place by Leia Larson in the girls’ 1,600 in a personal-record time of 5:32.02.

“These athletes represented Port Angeles with grit and determination against some of the best competition in the state,” said head coach Casey McDonald. “Their hard work and consistency are paying off, and I’m proud of the way they continue to grow and compete.”

The Roughriders continue their season at the Mount Tahoma Track Festival on Saturday in Tacoma.

Boys Soccer East Jefferson 3, Northwest School 1

SEATTLE — The East Jefferson boys soccer team got back on the winning track with a 3-1 victory over The Northwest School on Monday.

With the victory, the Rivals improve to 5-2-1 on the season. East Jefferson has only played two matches in the past two weeks and it was the Rivals’ first win since March 22.

Coach Logan Stegner said the team started slowly. “But we finished the last 60 minutes really strong.”

“We played well. Northwest comes from a pretty competitive league,” he said.

Simon Barlow scored a pair of goals for the Rivals, while Manaseh Lanphear Ramirez also had a goal. They were all unassisted. Emilio Lopez picked up the victory in goal.

The Rivals have one nonleague game left, played Tuesday after press deadline in Granite Falls. East Jefferson (0-1, 5-2-1) plays exclusively Nisqually League matches beginning Thursday with a game at Cascade Christian, which is unbeaten, untied and leading the league (2-0-0, 5-0-0).

“That’s going to be a big test,” Stegner said.
