PREP ROUNDUP: Port Angeles trio pitches Riders baseball to win

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles baseball boys got a great pitching performance from the trio of Colton McGuffey, Brody Merritt and Brady Shimko and edged Kingston 2-1 in a league-opening pitchers’ duel win.

Port Angeles hurlers combined to give up just two hits and three walks while striking out 11 in Thursday’s game.

McGuffey went three innings, giving up one hit and two walks and striking out five, while Merritt had a similar line of three innings pitched, one hit allowed and five strikeouts. Shimko didn’t give up a hit in his one inning of relief work, though Kingston did break through for an unearned run in the seventh to make the Roughriders nervous

“I thought the boys battled hard all night, our approach was a little bit passive at the plate, I thought we could’ve been a little bit more aggressive to fastballs in the zone,” said coach Karl Myers.

Ethan Flodstrom had a first-inning RBI triple that Myers said would have been a home run at most parks. It was one of only a handful of hits the Riders managed in this tight game.

“[The] Pitchers did a great job dictating the tempo and keeping us in the game for 7 innings,” he said.

Port Angeles (1-0, 2-0) hosted Lake Washington Saturday. Results of that game were not known before press deadline. The Riders’ next game is at Bremerton (0-1, 1-2) at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Sequim 2, Fife 2

SEQUIM — Sequim remained unbeaten on the season, getting a pair of goal from Liam Harris, his fifth and sixth goals of the year, and held on to beat a Coupeville team 4-2 that tried to rally from a 3-0 deficit.

The Wolves got up 3-0 in the first half of Friday’s game on an unassisted free kick by Hayuk Minano, a goal by Eli Gish with an assist from Minano and a goal by Harris, also with an assist from Minano.

Coupeville roared back with two quick goals in the 57th and 66th minutes by Derrick Layva. Sequim picked up an insurance goal from Harris in the 67th minute with an assist to Gish.

Coach Dave Brasher said Sequim was missing three starters who were participating in science and knowledge fairs. It was also Sequim’s third game in four days.

“That was a group of tired boys,” he said.

He named Chris Morgan his player of the game for his defense.

On Thursday, Sequim scored a late goal to force a draw with Fife 2-2. Harris scored both of the Wolves’ goals, with assists from Byron Wright and Ryan Tolberd.

All of the goals were scored in the first half.

Brasher said the Wolves nearly pulled out a win several times in the second half as Michael McAleer and Minano each had near-misses on golden opportunities.

“We played really well,” said Brasher. “We just couldn’t get that winner.”

Sequim (1-0, 2-0-1), next plays at home at 6:45 p.m. Monday against North Mason (1-1, 1-1-1), in their fourth match in six days.

Kingston 4, Port Angeles 2

KINGSTON — Port Angeles got up 2-0 early against Kingston, but the Olympic League 2A Division defending champion Buccaneers responded with two quick goals at the end of the first half, then two more in the second half to win 4-2.

The Roughriders were up 2-0 just seven minutes into Friday’s game on goals by Andrew and Stuart Methner. Stuart’s goal was assisted by Andrew.

Andrew Methner’s goal came on a rebound after Andrew St. George headed a ball off the post.

Kingston’s Henry Golden had a hat trick and an assist in bringing the Buccaneers back from that early hole.

The Buccaneers capitalized on a few defensive lapses and mistakes by the Riders to get back into the game and take the eventually take the lead in the second half,” said coach Chris Saari. “Kingston … fought back well from their 2-0 early deficit. They won the Olympic league 2A title last year and went to the quarterfinals in State. They have good overall team skill, moved the ball well and finished strongly in the game.”

Saari named Stuart Methner his offensive player of the match and Hollund Bailey his defensive player. He named Andrew Methner his transition player of the game.

Port Angeles (0-1, 2-1) next plays at home at 6:45 p.m. Monday against Bremerton (1-1, 1-2).

Girls Softball

South Kitsap 10, Port Angeles 4

PORT ORCHARD — The Port Angeles girls got a pair of home runs from Jada Cargo-Acosta and Madlyn Roening, but couldn’t do much more damage than that in losing 10-4 to 4A South Kitsap.

Not only is South Kitsap a 4A school, the Wolves qualified for the 4A state tournament last year.

Coach Randy Steinman said errors didn’t help the Riders in Thursday’s loss.

“Port Angeles made some mistakes in the field that gave South Kitsap the extra opportunities it needed to win the game. Even with the mistakes, we had some bright spots that shows this team is heading in the right direction,” he said.

In addition to Roening and Cargo-Acosta’s home runs, Natalie Steinman went 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI, while Hope O’Connor was 1-4 with a double and an RBI.

Port Angeles (0-0, 2-1) next plays at Bremerton (0-0, 0-2) in the Riders’ Olympic League 2A Division opener at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.
