PREP ROUNDUP: Forks wrestlers win The Rock; Chimacum hoops girls win

VASHON — The Forks boys got division championships from Luke Dahlgren and Colby Demorest and won The Rock wrestling tournament on Vashon Island last weekend.

It was the second invitational title for the Spartans this season. Earlier this month, they also won the Mount Baker Invitational.

Forks got 170 team points, edging another 1A wrestling powerhouse, Zillah, which had 157.5. Lakeside (9 Mile Falls) had 155 points for third.

Forks got wins from Dahlgren at 285 pounds and Demorest at 182 pounds. Dahlgren and Demorest each won three matches. Demorest won two matches by pin and won his championship bout by outpointing Kai Olson of Montesano 2-1.

Dahlgren won all three of his matches with pins, beating Braeden Shannon of Mount Baker to win the 285 championship.

The Spartans also got two second-place finishes from Andres Santos-Delacruz at 120 pounds and Tristen Pisani at 220 pounds. Santos-Delacruz went 2-1 on the day, while Pisani went 3-1.

Forks had five other wrestlers place fourth.

They were:

Ariel Morales, 132 pounds.

Hayden Baker, 152 pounds.

Hayden Queen, 160 pounds.

Josh Salazar, 182 pounds (losing his only match to Demorest).

Shane Queen, 195 pounds.

Forks will next wrestle at the Gut Check at the ShoWare Center in King County on Friday and Saturday.

Girls Basketball Chimacum 49, Steilacoom 48

TACOMA — The Chimacum girls got a huge boost of confidence for the rest of their season, hanging on to beat 2A Steilacoom 49-48 in the consolation final of the Charles Wright Holiday Tournament.

Steilacoom is also 3-1 in the South Puget Sound League, so the Sentinels are no pushover.

Best of all for the Cowboys, they beat Steilacoom without having to rely on leading scorer Mia McNair as several other players stepped up.

“It was almost night and day from the [Tenino game, a loss], where we got out of sync,” said coach Trevor Huntingford. “We were able to dig deep and right to the end.”

Jada Trafton had a career high for the Cowboys with 18 points. Maddie Dowling scored seven and “hit a super clutch 3-pointer” in the fourth quarter. Huntingford said made a huge play on an offensive rebound down the stretch and that McNair, who scored 11, barely half her season average, played her usual solid defense.

“Everybody played a big role,” he said.

Chimacum (2-0, 4-5) has another nonleague game coming up against a 2A opponent on the road Saturday against Aberdeen.

Chimacum 49, Steilacoom 48

Chimacum 10 14 9 16 — 49

Steilacoom 10 16 7 15 — 48

Chimacum (49) — Trafton 18, McNair 11, Yaley 7, Dowling 7, Horner 4, Huntingford 2.

Steilacoom (48) — Miller 16, Herring 9, Evans 9, Cepeda 6, Stills 4, Crosby 1.
