PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: East Jefferson girls go to double OT to win

Sequim boys’ rally comes up just short

CHIMACUM — East Jefferson got huge games from freshman Penina Vialolo and sophomore Juliette O’Hara in pulling out a clutch 44-40 double-overtime win over Vashon this weekend.

Vialolo contributed 22 rebounds and hit some big free throws in overtime. O’Hara scored all six of the Rivals’ points in the second overtime with the Rivals’ top scorer, Alyssa Vandenberg, fouled out.

“Wonderful win for the program,” said coach Lorraine Rimson. “JV won, too. Two great team character-building wins.”

Katy Botkin hit a pair of 3-pointers and had 12 points. Vandenberg finished with 20 points.

The victory evened the Rivals’ league record at 3-3. East Jefferson, 3-6 overall, next plays at Annie Wright (6-1, 7-1) on Tuesday.

NEAH BAY — The Neah Bay girls basketball team got a balanced effort with 10 players scoring in a 61-39 win over Orcas Island.

Allie Greene led the Red Devils with four 3-pointers and 14 points. Gracie Chartraw had 10 points and Cerise Moss nine.

Forks 79, Ocosta 21

FORKS — Forks got off to a 50-8 lead after the first half and went on to beat Ocosta 79-21 with six different players scoring at least eight points.

Keira Johnson led the Spartans with 26 points, while Chloe Gaydeski-St. John and Janessa Ramos each had 11, Kyra Neel and Bailey Johnson each had nine and Kadie Wood had eight.

“That was our most balanced offense game of the year,” said coach David Hurn, who singled out freshman Gaydeski-St. John for a strong game.

“Chloe has been working hard the past couple of weeks. That was her best game of her young high school career,” he said.

The Spartans (5-0, 7-3) next play at Chief Leschi (3-2, 6-4) on Tuesday as part of a long stretch on the road. Forks has six road games in January.

“We’re first in league right now, but we have to prove ourselves on the road,” Hurn said.

Bellingham 57, Sequim 54

SEQUIM — The Sequim basketball team got in a big hole early and mounted a comeback for much of the rest of its game against Bellingham this weekend, but ended up coming up just short in a 57-54 loss.

Bellingham got up 25-7 in the first quarter. The Wolves outscored the Bayhawks 47-32 the rest of the game.

Zach Thompson led the Wolves with 14 points while Vince Carrizosa hit three 3-pointers and scored 11. Keenan Greene scored 10.

The Wolves (3-3, 5-7) have a big road game Tuesday against Olympic Peninsula rival Port Angeles (5-1, 7-4). That game begins at 7 p.m.

JOYCE — The Crescent Loggers dominated the boards and built up a 30-point lead in a 63-47 win over Taholah this weekend.

“We got another nonleague game under our belt against a really scrappy Taholah team. It was a good bounce back after our last game [a loss to Summit Classical],” said coach Chris Ferrier.

“We really played with tremendous defensive effort in the first half, limiting Taholah to one shot on just about every possession. We also did a really good job of getting the ball inside against the zone,” Ferrier said.

Three Loggers had double figures. Conner Ferro-May led the team with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Conner Bauers had 11 points and six assists and Lukas Love contributed 12 points.

Crescent (7-3) next plays Tuesday at Chief Kitsap.

NEAH BAY — The Neah Bay boys basketball team got a big game from Tyler Swan to fend off Orcas Island 71-68.

Swan had 21 points and 14 rebounds. Jaden Halttunen had 12 points and Makyah Chambers 10. Buddy Aguirre had 12 rebounds.
