CHIMACUM — Despite only getting one hit, the East Jefferson baseball team gave defending 1A state champion Klahowya everything it could handle in a 5-4 extra-inning loss at Chimacum High School.
The Rivals got 14 strikeouts from pitcher Brody Moore, who went 6⅔ innings and allowed just two hits and one earned run. Evan Kraft pitched 1⅓ innings, giving up two hits and an earned run with a strikeout. It was the second fantastic outing from Moore, who pitched a complete-game, seven-inning, three-hit, seven-strikeout shutout last week over Vashon.
The game was locked in a 3-3 tie after seven innings. The Eagles took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth.
The Rivals didn’t get a hit until the eighth inning, yet nearly won the game, getting the tying and winning runs on base. Down two runs, Cody Cable opened the bottom of the seventh by getting hit by a pitch. Rylan Dunn followed with a single. The two baserunners moved up on a wild pitch and then Moore walked to load the bases.
After a strikeout, Cash Holmes came up with a sacrifice fly, scoring Cable to make it 5-4. With two runners still on base, James Lattier fouled out to end the game.
East Jefferson (1-5, 1-5) takes to the field again in Chimacum to host Seattle Christian (0-7, 0-8) in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
