GOLF COLUMN: Spring Shotgun set at Peninsula Golf Club

THE EMERALD GEM atop the hill, Peninsula Golf Club in Port Angeles, will host its 57th annual Spring Shotgun event Friday and Saturday, May 26-27.

A two-man or two-woman team shamble format event, the tournament is open to the public and includes a practice round on Friday, May 25.

Players must be age 21 or older. The maximum handicap is 36 and there can be an eight-stroke differential between partners.

In shamble format play, teams pick the best drive off the tee and then each player plays their own ball through the remainder of the hole. A minimum of six drives must be used per player per round.

Entry fees are $240 per team. Green fees, driving range, lunch and drink tickets are included.

Play will tee off with a 10 a.m. shotgun start on both days of the tournament.

Prizes and fun also are planned.

A get-together featuring hors d’oeuvres will be held Saturday evening following play, according to Peninsula Golf Club member Greg Shields.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Shields said of the annual event. “We get a lot of people who come over from Canada, from Arizona and all over the place who come back to Port Angeles and play in it every year.”

To register for the event, stop by or phone the Peninsula Pro Shop at 360-457-6501.

The shot was witnessed by Perry Keeling of Port Angeles.

Nice shooting, Paul.

Disco Bay ace

George Cave recently holed out on the 165-yard par-3 eighth hole at Discovery Bay Golf Club near Port Townsend.

Cave used his 5-hybrid on the shot.

Nice shot, George.

Disco Bay info

This run of solid weather has helped area courses flourish even faster than usual this spring.

Discovery Bay Golf Club head pro Jeff Kent said his course outside of Port Townsend is no exception.

“The course is getting into excellent condition with the great weather we’ve been having. Our greens have been really good for a while now, firm and fast.”

Kent said his weekly Tuesday golf clinics start this week and are only $10 per session. The sessions will run from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. each Tuesday during the golf season. Space is limited on the Discovery Bay driving range, so phone ahead to reserve a spot.

Thursday is the season kickoff for Discovery Bay Golf Club’s Thursday Night League.

Teams and individual players can join the league, which plays nine holes each Thursday with play beginning at 5 p.m.

For more information on Discovery Bay Golf Club, phone 360-385-0704 and ask for Jeff.

Kent said the Discovery Bay Men’s Club plays Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9 a.m. The men just started their Eclectic Tournament, with events held weekly.

Discovery Bay’s nine-hole ladies group plays every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. and its 18-hole ladies group plays every Thursday at 9:30 a.m.

Golf 4 Grads successful

The Cedars at Dungeness hosted the Golf 4 Grads Tournament earlier this month to raise funds the Sequim High School Class of 2018’s safe and sober graduation night party.

Cedars Director of Golf Bill Shea, himself a parent of a 2018 grad, said more than $11,000 was raised during the tournament.

“With everyone’s efforts we were able to raise over $11,000 for the safe and sober graduation party on June 8,” Shea said.

“We had about 45 players attend the event. The team of Larry Brown, Todd Irwin, Darren Stephens and Rob Thompson tied with Joe Luce, Courtland Middleberger, Danny Romero and Aaron Staeben at 15-under-par in the four-man scramble format.

“Long drive for the men went to Coutland Middleberger, while long drive for the women went to Brooke Griffin.

Shea said former Sequim girls golf coach Gary Kettel had a hole-in-one on the 11th hole.

“Congratulations to the winners and appreciation for all those that participated,” Shea said. Special thanks to our valuable sponsors who really help raise a lot of money.”

The event was sponsored by 7 Cedars Casino with support from fellow sponsors First Federal and OSP Sling, Swinerton Builders, Wilder Auto, Price Ford, Lakeside Industries, Koenig Subaru, Payne Law Firm, Team McAleer Re/Max, Anytime Fitness – Sequim, Rinehart Consulting, Bleimisters, Peninsula Golf Course and the Cedars at Dungeness.

Registration is open through May 20 for PGA Jr. League, a team format youth golf option at Cedars at Dungeness and Peninsula Golf Club.

Teams of 13 and younger players will be coached by Smithson and Peninsula head pro Chad Wagner, while Shea will work with 16U golfers in Sequim.

Players will form two-person teams and compete in scramble-format events that keep the focus on fun, while building up skill levels.

Not all of those shots will be golf-related. Players will have a chance to shoot a basketball and kick a soccer ball on select holes.

Wilder Auto is sponsoring hole-in-one prizes on par 3 holes, and there will be KP prizes for select par-3s.

Long drive contests for men’s and women’s players are planned.
