ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Isabella Diaz, Sequim girls wrestling

The HammerHead Invitational is one of the largest wrestling meets in Washington, with more than 90 teams and hundreds of wrestlers competing in the Kitsap Sun Pavilion.

It’s quite a feat to win there and Sequim’s Isabella Diaz was the lone Olympic Peninsula grappler to win her weight division this weekend, earning her our athlete of the week honor for this week.

Wrestling at 120 pounds, Diaz won her first match with a pin, then won the semifinal in an 8-0 major decision. She took first place in her division by beating a 3A Central Kitsap opponent in a 6-2 decision.

Diaz also won earlier this month at a dual meet with Kingston and won two out of three matches at the Forks Tournament, both by pin, coming in second place to East Jefferson’s Mi Amada Lanphear-Ramirez.

Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
