The Sequim City Council has approved preliminary permitting and a land-use zoning modification allowing for construction of a regional shopping center south of the downtown core.
Bell Farm Center, tentatively set to feature a Fred Meyer department store in its first phase, was granted clearance by Planning Director Dennis Lefevre earlier this year.
City Council members voted in May to uphold Lefevre’s decision, but last month balked at proposed traffic-control measures related to the 16-acre development.
Lefevre, Sequim City Attorney Craig Ritchie and site developer Fred McConkey drafted a revised ordinance spelling out plans to mitigate increased traffic flows around the site. The council voted unanimously Monday night to approve the ordinance.
Fred Meyer has not fully committed to build a store in Sequim. A corporate representative told Peninsula Daily News last week that the division was working with parent company Kroger Stores Inc. to iron out details.
