Sequim: School Board shifts days to let teachers attend union rally in Olympia

SEQUIM — Unionized teachers in the Sequim School District became the latest group to be allowed to attend a Jan. 14 rally in Olympia instead of coming to work.

The School Board on Monday approved a change in the district calendar to allow the teachers to participate the Jan. 14 Day of Action rally.

That day will be a school holiday for students, to be made up March 7 — which had been a school vacation day.

About 76 percent of the 151-member Sequim Education Association voted last month to participate in the rally and asked the School Board to change the district calendar.

Other teacher unions in Clallam and Jefferson counties which will walk out for one day to go to Olympia include Port Angeles, Port Townsend and Chimacum.

Like Sequim’s, school boards in Port Angeles and Port Townsend have make changes to their school calendars to allow the day off for teachers.
