PORT ANGELES — A 43-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly led police on a brief chase that ended when his pickup truck crashed into a Sequim gas station.
Daniel R. Davis of Sequim was charged in Clallam County Superior Court on Thursday with one count each of attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle, second-degree burglary, second-degree theft and unauthorized control of a credit card.
Davis, who remained in the Clallam County jail in lieu of $15,000 bond Thursday, is scheduled to be arraigned at 9 a.m. Friday, April 12.
Davis was arrested Monday night after authorities said he led a deputy and two city police officers on a 74-second chase through Sequim, with stolen documents flying from the bed of the truck and littering the streets, before he plowed his Chevrolet S-10 truck into the outer pump island at Kettel’s 76 Station at 194 W. Washington St.
The chase reached speeds as high as 40 mph on streets limited to 25 mph and covered several blocks of the downtown neighborhood south of West Washington before it ended at 6:25 p.m.
Sequim police said the papers that were scattered in the streets had been stolen from a storage unit earlier in the evening.
On Tuesday, Superior Court Judge Eric Rohrer ordered Davis held in jail on $15,000 bail after a first court appearance.
Law enforcement officers had been alerted to watch for Davis, who was suspected of crimes in Port Angeles, Clallam County Chief Criminal Deputy Ron Cameron said Tuesday.
Deputy Brian Knutson attempted to pull Davis over on West Washington Street on Monday, Cameron said, and Davis fled, traveling on Sequim Avenue, the south West Washington Street alley and Bell Street, before circling back onto West Washington Street, where he met two police cars that joined the chase.
He apparently tried to turn north onto Second Street but careened into Kettel’s pump 7, police said. His truck clipped the diesel pump, knocking it out of order, and then crashed into the mid-island support post, they said.
