PORT TOWNSEND — Salish Coast Elementary will host Cary Peterson for a screening of “Cultivating Kids” and a discussion about school gardens at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
The program at Port Townsend’s newest school, which is at 1637 Grant St., is designed for staff, parents, students and community members who are interested in learning about school gardens and next steps for moving forward with a school garden at Salish Coast.
Peterson coordinates the South Whidbey School Farms program at the South Whidbey School District. She founded the program six years ago.
Members of the Salish Coast Garden committee will talk about opportunities for community members to get engaged in the Salish Coast garden project.
The former elementary school at that address, Grant Street, had a garden program. That will continue in the new and enlarged garden space at Salish Coast Elementary, said officials.
In addition, the Port Townsend High School has a large garden behind the Stuart Building that is maintained by ninth grade students, a garden coordinator and volunteers.
It serves as the production garden for the school district food service and provides fresh lettuce and other produce that is incorporated into salad bars and scratch-cooked meals for all the school sites.
The school district has transformed the food service program to a complete scratch cooking program that incorporates foods from the garden, and local farms, said officials.
