Port Townsend: Old tugboat waking from deep sleep

PORT TOWNSEND — The Sand Man has slowly been waking from its sleep at the Port Townsend Shipwright’s Cooperative.

Once called a “yacht among tugboats,” Sand Man had deteriorated so much over its nine decades of hauling gravel, sand, logs and fuel that she sank as it was towed from Olympia 1½ years ago.

But Sand Man is nearly ready to return to the waters of Puget Sound after $300,000 worth of restoration at the Shipwright’s Cooperative at the Port Townsend Boat Haven.

Project manager Ben Tyler said Sand Man will be relaunched in February after 19 months of refurbishment.
