Port commissioners OK $300,000 remodel of Point Hudson hospital building

PORT TOWNSEND — Port of Port Townsend leaders on Wednesday came one step closer to moving their executive and accounting staff to new offices in the historical Point Hudson “Hospital Building.”

With initial renovation of the former military structure already under way, Port commissioners on Wednesday approved a project plan that proposes remodeling the interior of the 8,400-square-foot building for about $300,000.

Executive Director Larry Crockett told commissioners that between eight and 10 different contracting firms would be needed to complete the work that will clean up asbestos under the building, seal creosote-soaked hardwood floors, remove walls and add plumbing and wiring, among other finish work.

An architect’s conceptual plan is now being drawn up and remodeling work should begin this summer.

“We need to bring the building up to code,” Crockett said.

October moving date?

The plan is to move staff from a modular building at 333 Benedict St. to the Point Hudson building in October once work is completed.

The staff would take up about a third of the building space, and the remainder would be leased to marine-related businesses, Crockett said.
