PORT ANGELES — Clallam County sheriff’s investigators Tuesday night were still trying to determine the source of a powerful odor inside Wal-Mart that made some employees feel ill and prompted the store’s evacuation.
Sheriff’s Detective Dave Ellefson said employees noticed a noxious odor inside the store around the same time a man was seen near a sewer pipe, possibly tampering with it, near the store’s pharmacy area.
Store staff evacuated the building at about 7 p.m. and contacted the Sheriff’s Department.
Detective Grant Lightfoot, who is trained in hazardous-materials investigations, was sent inside with two Clallam County Fire District No. 2 firefighters to collect samples from the store.
Sheriff’s Capt. Steve Snover said nothing significant was found inside the building.
