Port Angeles: Scooter law approved

Motorized foot scooters and their riders will be subject to new laws under an ordinance approved by the Port Angeles City Council on Monday night.

The new ordinance requires riders to be at least 16 years old.

It also prohibit the scooters on streets with a speed limit greater than 25 mph and on sidewalks, paths, trails or in parks.

The motorized scooters will be allowed only from sunrise to sunset. Riders must wear helmets, and the scooters must have a working muffler.

Parents could be subject to a citation if their child violates the ordinance.

Ordinance violations would be civil infractions with a $75 fine for the first violation, $250 for the second and $250 for subsequent violations.
